This is one of those stories of when a brand gets its advertising & marketing campaign so very, very wrong.
This is what I’ve found out today, via a Snickers UK Twitter campaign that unravelled (quite literally) over the weekend:
- Problem: Being hungry makes you more intelligent
- Cure: Eat a Snickers bar
Pockets full of cash must of been given to the likes of Katie Price (AKA Jordan), Ian Botham and Amir Khan for the following ‘sponsored tweets’:
Katie Price’s Tweets:
- “Great news about China’s latest GDP figures!!”
- “OMG!! Eurozone debt problems can only be properly solved by true fiscal union!!! #comeonguys”
Snickers UK Twitter Response: ”RT @MissKatiePrice: You’re not you when you’re hungry @SnickersUK #hungry http://t.co/tSSFFFz6”
Amir Khan’s Tweets:
- “Big party tonight – BORING. Rather be at home with my stamp collection.”
- “Just got myself a Swedish Treskilling Yellow!! Pricey stamp but worth it.”
- “Success, fame, recognition. I’d trade it all for a 1918 US Inverted Jenny!!!”
Snickers UK Twitter Response: “Phew, it looks like @AmirKingKhan is back to normal after getting a SNICKERS in his grasp: http://t.co/FnGXZ43R”
Sir Ian Botham’s Tweets:

Oh Mars, who created this awful marketing campaign for you? Was it a chap in a tweed jacket, but with an overall smart-casual look? Not mentioning any marketing & advertising agnecy bosses *ahem*.
Quite a good idea, but completely the wrong way around, surely? Then oh wait… that would be an advertising standards issue… ok, scrub that – it was a completely naff idea. Shame, I love the brand, so I hope it continues to succeed. Please don’t leave me with just party rings to eat.

Wtf. As marketing and advertising is my passion, I thought I’d delve deeper in to Snickers UK advertising on social networks. They’re also in the midst of launching an advert (http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=576978036886)… with Joan Collins, FML! Yeah, it’s also gone down as a led balloon with the 277,262 people who ‘Like’ the brand on Facebook… the video has been live for 24hrs and only 12 people ‘Like’ the video, 11 shares and 7 comments. :-S
